Tattooing has a significant part in Thailand's religious tradition and superstition.
Add in the tremendous tourism visiting the country and you'll quickly understand why, in the Thai Capital as an example, you can find Tattoo Artists at almost every street corner and shopping centers.

Considering that, it is obviously difficult for a newcomer to make a good choice amongst all the available options, especially when you know there's absolutely no official Tattoo Booths governing body in Thailand, nor any other way than mere reputation to verify the competences of a Tattoo Artist.

We will try to give you a regular look at artists, in Thailand and abroad, who are over all hygienic, inspired, talented, understanding and respectful of their customers.

Today, you get to meet our friend Khun Ouy, the owner of the Ouy Tattoo Church (and the artist of some of DarkAsia's staff members tattoos). She is the sweetest person, and a serious female Tattoo artist.

When did you open Tattoo Church?
Since 1999, Ouy Tattoo was at a spotless, sidewalk level  booth, corner of Sukhumvit & Asoke Road.

How did you begin the art of Tattooing?
My ex-husband was an accomplished Bangkok tattooer and after we broke up, I decided to pursue the art to support   myself and my  young daughter.

What are your favorite kinds of Tattoo designs to work on?
When I tattoo modern style designs I can pursue my interests in art. I can experiment with color, the design qualities. I can make things interesting for myself.

Do you create Tattoo drawings on customer's request?
Yes of course

Do you sometimes use Thai (or other) traditional techniques for tattooing?
No, I don't use Thai traditional techniques but I some times do the superstitious tattoo designs that are Thai traditional upon customer's request.

What are the specialties at Tattoo Church?
Tattoo, piercing and henna

Can you tell us a bit about tattoo tradition in Thailand?
Most of Thai traditional tattoos are given by monks. They blessed the image, the ink, and the person who is getting tattooed. As they are giving tattoos, they chanted spells meant to protect & given strength that person.

How would you describe your typical customer's profile?
My customers are looking for a tattooer who is very professional, knows the trade, and knows the ropes. Most of them are tourists.

What would be your advice to the people who want to get tattooed?
The firstthing you should do before getting a tattoo is to talk to the artist, ask questions about choosing a tattoo design, getting tattoo design ideas and generally about the process, health risks involved and removing a tattoo later if needed. Do some research before making a decision about getting a tattoo.
